Woodcuts from Missoula, Montana

Drawn outdoors.
Carved, printed and painted by hand.

Each block is designed and carved by hand, printed on a 1984 Takach press, and painted one at a time, so every print is a singular piece of art.

How a woodcut is made

Drawn, carved, printed, painted.

01

Draw

Every print begins outdoors with a field journal, drawn from direct encounters with plants, animals and places.

02

Carve

The drawing becomes a block. Every line is cut by hand with gouges and knives.

03

Print

Each block is inked and printed on a 1984 Takach etching press in the Missoula studio.

04

Paint

Every print is painted by hand, one at a time, so no two are quite the same.
